Description

Indulge in a rich and decadent black cocoa cake that is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsweetened black cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Carefully stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

  • For extra richness, consider adding a chocolate ganache or cream cheese frosting.
  • You can substitute the black cocoa with regular cocoa powder for a milder flavor.
  • For a fun twist, add chocolate chips or nuts to the batter before baking.
