  • 2 teaspoons Yeast Use active dry yeast or fresh yeast for best results.
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar Feel free to reduce for a less sweet loaf.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Can be omitted for low-sodium diets.
  • 1.5 cups Water Warm to about 110°F (43°C) to activate yeast.
  • 2 tablespoons Butter (or oil) Swap for plant-based butter for dairy-free.
For the Color
  • 1 bottle Food coloring (red and black) Consider using natural dyes for a healthier alternative.

Equipment

  • mixing bowl
  • Loaf pan
  • Kitchen towel

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Gradually pour in warm water and mix until a dough forms. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  2. Cover the bowl with a towel and let it rise in a warm area for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  3. Punch down the dough and divide into two portions. Color one half red and the other black, kneading until colors are well-distributed.
  4. On a floured surface, roll out both portions into rectangles. Layer and twist them together to shape the loaf.
  5. Place in greased loaf pan, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Bake for 30 minutes until golden brown and hollow when tapped.
  7. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
