Ingredients

For the Filling
  • 1 cup Light Brown Sugar Provides sweetness and moisture in the filling. Substitution: Brown sugar can be used in a 1:1 ratio for white sugar.
  • 1/2 cup Black Cocoa Powder Adds a unique, rich chocolate flavor resembling Oreos. Substitution: Dark cocoa powder can be used if black cocoa is unavailable.
  • 1 tablespoon Ground Cinnamon Enhances the warm, spicy flavor in the filling.
  • 1 cup Crushed Oreos Provides texture and distinctive Oreo flavor. Prep Note: Use Oreo crumbs or whole cookies crushed into pieces.
For the Dough
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter Creates a creamy base for spreading on the dough and in the glaze. Note: Use softened butter for easier spreading.
  • 3.5 cups All-Purpose Flour The main structure of the dough; initial 3.5 cups is mandatory, but additional flour is added as needed. Substitution: Gluten-free 1:1 flour can be utilized, but texture may vary.
  • 2 teaspoons Instant Dry Yeast Helps the dough rise quickly. Note: Active dry yeast can be substituted but requires longer rise times.
  • 1 teaspoon Fine Salt Balances sweetness and enhances flavor.
  • 1 cup Whole Milk Adds moisture; it should be warmed before mixing. Substitution: Unsweetened almond milk for a dairy-free option.
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar Sweetens the dough; enhances browning.
  • 1 large Egg Acts as a binder and contributes to the dough's richness. Substitution: Flax egg as a vegan alternative (1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 2.5 tbsp water).
For the Glaze
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar Used in the glaze to achieve a smooth, sweet finish.
  • 1 teaspoon Artificial Vanilla Extract Enhances the sweet glaze flavor. Substitution: Pure vanilla extract for a richer taste.

Equipment

  • Stand mixer
  • Baking pan
  • Saucepan

Method

Directions
  1. In a medium bowl, combine light brown sugar, black cocoa powder, and ground cinnamon. Stir well until evenly mixed, ensuring there are no lumps.
  2. Using a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, mix 3.5 cups of all-purpose flour, instant dry yeast, and fine salt at low speed. Meanwhile, warm the whole milk with granulated sugar and unsalted butter in a saucepan over low heat until melted and just warm. Gradually mix the warm milk mixture into the flour mixture until a sticky dough begins to form.
  3. Add the large egg to the sticky dough and mix at medium speed until it's fully incorporated. If the dough remains too sticky, sprinkle in a little more flour, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough is tacky but no longer sticks to your fingers.
  4. Fold the crushed Oreos gently into the dough using a spatula or wooden spoon, ensuring they're evenly distributed throughout. Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let the dough rest for about 10 minutes.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle approximately 12x18 inches in size. Spread softened unsalted butter evenly over the rolled-out dough, then sprinkle your previously prepared filling and additional crushed Oreos on top.
  6. Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough tightly into a log. Once rolled, slice it evenly into 9 pieces using a sharp knife or dental floss for clean cuts. Place the slices into a greased 9x13 inch baking pan.
  7. To allow the rolls to rise, place the pan in a warm (turned-off) oven for 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once preheated, bake the rolls for 26-30 minutes or until they are golden brown across the tops.
  9. In a medium bowl, whisk together melted butter, powdered sugar, whole milk, and artificial vanilla extract until you achieve a smooth consistency.
  10. Allow the baked Oreo Cinnamon Rolls to cool slightly in the pan for about 5 minutes. Drizzle the prepared vanilla glaze generously over the top.
