Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a small bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of sugar, 2 teaspoons of active dry yeast, and 1 cup of warm water. Stir gently and let it sit for about 10 minutes or until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Add 1/4 cup of plain yogurt and 2 tablespoons of oil or ghee. Pour in the frothy yeast mixture and knead for about 10 minutes.
  3. Shape dough into a ball and place in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and set in a warm area to rise for about 1 hour.
  4. Punch down the risen dough, divide into 8 portions, and roll each into an oval shape, about 8 inches wide.
  5. Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each naan for about 1 minute on each side until golden brown, keeping them warm wrapped in a towel.
  6. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of melted butter with 2 teaspoons of minced garlic. Brush this mixture over the hot naans and sprinkle with salt and fresh herbs.
