Ingredients
  

For the Burgers
  • 1 pound ground turkey or ground chicken
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika or smoked chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder or fresh minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder or shallots
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon salt kosher recommended
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce for a gluten-free option
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped; cilantro or chives are substitutes
For the Buns
  • 4 whole whole wheat hamburger buns or ciabatta/brioche
For the Avocado Salsa
  • 2 ripe avocados diced
  • 1/4 medium red onion diced
  • 1 medium tomato diced; cherry tomatoes optional
  • 1/2 medium jalapeño finely chopped; optional
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice or lemon juice if unavailable
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • fresh cilantro optional for garnish

Method
 

Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and parsley. Mix well.
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a patty about ¾-inch thick. Refrigerate while you preheat the grill.
  3. Preheat the grill to medium heat and oil the grates. Grill the burgers for 5-6 minutes per side until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F.
  4. In a separate bowl, prepare the avocado salsa by combining diced avocados, red onion, tomato, jalapeño, lime juice, salt, and pepper.
  5. During the last 1-2 minutes of grilling, toast the whole wheat buns cut-side down on the grill.
  6. Assemble the burgers by placing a patty on each toasted bun and topping with avocado salsa. Garnish with cilantro if desired.
