Ingredients

For the Base
  • 8 slices Brioche or Challah Bread Use slightly stale bread for optimal custard absorption and structure.
  • 6 Eggs Fresh eggs create the best custard texture.
  • 2 cups Whole Milk You can substitute with 2% milk for a lighter option.
For the Filling
  • 8 oz Cream Cheese Provides a rich, creamy layer; light cream cheese can be used for a healthier alternative.
  • 2 cups Fresh Strawberries Sweet and juicy; swap these for blueberries if you want a different twist.
For Sweetness
  • 1/4 cup Granulated Sugar Enhances sweetness; adjust the amount to your preference.
  • 1/4 cup Brown Sugar Adds a deeper flavor; mix with granulated sugar for a richer taste.
For Flavoring
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla Extract Always use pure for the most aromatic results.
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon Optional but adds warmth to the dish.
  • 1 pinch Salt Enhances all the flavors harmoniously.
Optional Toppings
  • Powdered Sugar For a lovely finishing touch.
  • Maple Syrup or Whipped Cream Serve on the side for that extra indulgence.

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large Bowl
  • whisk
  • spatula
  • Plastic wrap
  • oven

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Begin by cutting your slightly stale brioche or challah bread into 1-inch cubes, and spread half of these cubes evenly in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Layer half of the cream cheese cubes and half of the freshly sliced strawberries over the bread in the baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle the remaining bread cubes on top, followed by the remaining cream cheese and strawberries.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together fresh eggs, whole milk, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, a hint of cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  5. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered bread and fruit, gently pressing down with a spatula.
  6. Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Uncover the baking dish and bake for 40–45 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Allow the dish to cool slightly for about 10 minutes before slicing, dust with powdered sugar, and serve warm.
